Betting strategies: what works and what doesn't
Ladder betting, chasing losses, accumulators, sure bets, value betting: we tested popular strategies on 43,288 matches in 27 football leagues since 2017 with real odds — the market average, the best price and the sharp line.
The short answer: no staking plan beats the bookmaker's margin — it only changes the shape of the loss. A chance of profit exists only where you have an edge over the market, and even then it is hard work.
Some strategies are also tested on hockey (3,517 matches) and basketball (2,709 NBA matches): the margin, favourites, the ladder, the best price and the draw martingale in hockey.
Where to start
Why bets lose on average — and by how much.
Popular systems
The ones recommended most often. Tested on past matches, not one of them ends up in profit.
- Doesn't workLadder bettingEvery step hands part of the margin to the bookmaker, and a single miss wipes out the whole chain. A ladder to ×10 returns on average 96 of every 100 staked.8.2% of ladders reached ×10 (8.5% at fair odds)
- Doesn't workThe draw martingaleChasing trades frequent small wins for a rare loss of the whole bank, and the margin stays where it was.11.1% of season-long chases with a bank of 100 go bust
- Doesn't workFibonacci, D'Alembert, LabouchèreA staking plan changes neither the chances nor the margin. It only makes wins frequent and losses rare but deep.59% of martingale sessions go bust
- Doesn't workAccumulatorsThe margin of each leg is multiplied by the margin of the next. An accumulator of five favourites loses 19% of the stake on average.−4.0% a single bet on a favourite
- Doesn't workFavourites, underdogs and draws“Only back favourites” does not work: they lose less than the rest (−4.1%), but they still lose. Bookmakers earn the most on underdogs (−10.1%).−4.1% backing the favourite in every match
Where an edge can be found
These work, but they take data, speed and patience.
- HardValue bettingIt works only with a real edge over the market. Our model does not have one yet: the closing market rates matches more accurately, and we say so plainly.22,045 matches in the model test
- HardThe best priceIt helps: the same bet at the best price on the market loses 1.1% instead of 7.1%. But the best price alone is not enough for a profit.−7.1% bets at the average price
- HardEarly odds and CLVIt works together with the sharp line: an early price above the fair one beats the close (CLV +3.0%). But any cash profit is lost in the noise, and bookmakers cut the limits of those who bet this way.+3.0% CLV of bets where the best early price is 2% above the fair one
- HardLine movementThere is a signal, but it comes too late: outcomes whose odds fell by the close win more often than expected. Betting on them in advance paid off; once the drop is visible, it can no longer be cashed in.+7.5% at the early price, when the odds later fell
- HardSure betsIt works on paper: sure bets come up often but are small, and bookmakers quickly cut the limits of those who catch them.40% of matches had a sure bet at the best closing prices
Bankroll management
Not a strategy but a tool: how much to stake if you have an edge.
The model runs these strategies live
In Premium the model itself runs the ladder, the draw martingale, value bets and a flat stake on its own pick every day — in football, hockey and basketball, with no money amounts and no odds. You can see how the chains grow and where they break.
